Changing your password

Introduction

An effective system of passwords is a crucial tool to defend both the School and each of us as individuals. Our intention is that the School will ensure that it follows the current guidance given to schools by the National Security Cyber Centre: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/information/cyber-security-training-schools

Our School requirements are set out below.

Before you change your password

If you have 2-Step verification turned on (all staff do, it is optional for students), make sure the Google Authenticator is installed and correctly set up on your phone.

Password requirements

  • Passwords must be at least 8 characters long
  • Passwords under 13 characters in length must contain:
    • at least 1 lower case character (e.g. a, b, c)
    • at least 1 upper case character (e.g. A, B, C)
    • at least 1 numeric or special character (e.g. 1, 2, 3, !, @, %)
  • The password must not contain your username
  • The password must not contain your forename or surname

In addition to the above requirements, your password will be checked against a list of known bad passwords, i.e. passwords that have been exposed in data breaches, and a list of banned words (for example: Queen, Margaret, Escrick) that is managed by QM's IT department.

Once you have chosen a password to use, you can check if it is safe to use by visiting https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords.

The banned word list is available at https://vle.queenmargarets.com/mod/page/view.php?id=17514

Choosing a password

One very effective way to choose a password that is very difficult to hack is to compose a random selection of words. If you don’t feel inspired there is a very helpful tool here: https://password.queenmargarets.com/generator/

Do not use your School password for any other account - to do so is to give an unnecessary gift to hackers.

Password expiration

Given current guidelines, we no longer enforce regular password changes. It is your responsibility to ensure your password is safe and secure. If you believe your password may be compromised (e.g. someone else knows what it is), you must take steps to change it as soon as possible. You can check whether any of your passwords have been compromised by using https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords

How to change your password

Your password for all school IT systems are synchronised. This means that you only need to change your password once and it is automatically updated on all systems for you.

To change your school password you have two options:

1. From a school owned Windows computer

  • Log onto any school computer
  • Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and select the "Change a password..." option
  • Enter your current password
  • Enter your new password twice and click the arrow.
  • Your new password must meet the requirements stated above

2. On any other device using the self-service portal

  • Visit https://password.queenmargarets.com
  • Enter your user name.
  • Enter your current password
  • Enter your new password twice and click "Change password".
  • Your new password must meet the requirements stated above

After changing your password

You will need to update your WiFi settings on all devices to use the new password.

You will be signed out of any Google services, so you will need to log in again on all devices.

If you have 2-step verification turned on, you will need your Google Authenticator app, or a backup code.
