Changing your password

An effective system of passwords is a crucial tool to defend both the School and each of us as individuals. Our intention is that the School will ensure that it follows the current guidance given to schools by the National Security Cyber Centre:

Our School requirements are set out below.

Before you change your password

If you have 2-Step verification turned on (all staff do, it is optional for students), make sure the Google Authenticator is installed and correctly set up on your phone.

Password requirements

  • Passwords must be at least 8 characters long
  • Passwords under 13 characters in length must contain:
    • at least 1 lower case character (e.g. a, b, c)
    • at least 1 upper case character (e.g. A, B, C)
    • at least 1 numeric or special character (e.g. 1, 2, 3, !, @, %)
  • The password must not contain your username
  • The password must not contain your forename or surname

In addition to the above requirements, your password will be checked against a list of known bad passwords, i.e. passwords that have been exposed in data breaches, and a list of banned words (for example: Queen, Margaret, Escrick) that is managed by QM's IT department.

Once you have chosen a password to use, you can check if it is safe to use by visiting

The banned word list is available at

Choosing a password

One very effective way to choose a password that is very difficult to hack is to compose a random selection of words. If you don’t feel inspired there is a very helpful tool here:

Do not use your School password for any other account - to do so is to give an unnecessary gift to hackers.

Password expiration

Given current guidelines, we no longer enforce regular password changes. It is your responsibility to ensure your password is safe and secure. If you believe your password may be compromised (e.g. someone else knows what it is), you must take steps to change it as soon as possible. You can check whether any of your passwords have been compromised by using
